1. Teaching “Sit”
I’d hold a treat in my hand and let my puppy sniff it. Then I slowly moved it above his nose and slightly backward. As he naturally sat down to follow the motion, I’d say “sit” and immediately reward him with the treat and lots of praise. It only took a few tries before he got it!
2. Working on “Stay”
Once he mastered “sit,” I’d have him sit, hold my hand out like a stop sign, and say “stay.” At first, I only took one step back and rewarded him if he stayed put. Over time, I added more distance and longer waits.
3. Teaching “Come”
This one was all about enthusiasm. I’d squat down, call his name, and say “come” in an excited voice while holding a treat. When he ran over, I’d praise him like crazy and give him the treat.
4. Consistency and Fun
We practiced these commands daily, but only for 5-10 minutes at a time to keep it fun. I made sure to end each session on a positive note with a successful command and extra playtime.
5. Socializing
I also made an effort to introduce him to new people, dogs, and environments early on. It really helped him grow into a confident and well-behaved dog.
It took patience, but watching him learn and seeing that tail wag made it all worth it!
